Fabric Filter Dust Collector (Baghouse)

Fabric filters, also known as Baghouses, are used to filter dust and particulate from a gas stream. This type of filter is the most common form of abatement equipment in the world, with literally hundreds of thousands of installations. Fabric filters come in all sizes ranging from small bin vent collectors to very large dust collectors that can handle a million cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air or gas, or more.

Often a fabric filter is a key element in an overall abatement solution with dry scrubbing and absorption systems, for example. In these instances, the baghouse is part of an engineered (or custom) solution.

Baghouse Basics

We briefly describe the process in selecting the right solution for your process conditions. The process gas temperature and the type of particulate are key to determining the media material used in the fabric filter. The media material, or filter media is the cloth or cloth-like material that forms the bag. Often the industry or application has determined the best material choice based on experience. We can help identify this for you as well. The size and number of bags is determined by the air-to-cloth ratio. Experience is helpful in making this determination. In simple terms, the factors that contribute to determining the fabric material will be used along with the cleaning system to calculate a design air-to-cloth ratio. This number is the ratio of flow volume to filter area. Processes that require a low air-to cloth-ratio require more filter area than those that can operate at a high air to cloth ration. The expertise of the Dustex team can advise you on the best air-to-cloth ratio based on your needs.

Once the material is selected, we select the most appropriate re-cleaning method for the filter media. Reverse-air and pulse-jet are the most common methods of cleaning. Today, pulse-jet cleaning systems are preferred. In addition, we have can provide long bag solutions. If space is at a premium, or gas volumes are very large, longer bags can be the best solution.

From here decisions are made on the gas entry location and style, primarily choosing between hopper or side inlet. Along with this decision is determining the optimal hopper design. The hopper is where the dust will be collected and removed from the fabric filter. Dustex offers a variety of design variations, tailoring the system for your operation.

These criteria form the basis of the baghouse design. The final design should include all options that will allow for a long and robust life. These options include providing what is needed for your application: hopper heaters, external insulation and cladding, and emission monitors, to name a few.
